Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you change fuel filter on 6.7 Cummins?

According to the Cummins Maintenance Schedule you should replace engine & chassis mounted fuel filters every 15,000 miles or 12 months.

Where are the fuel filters on a 6.7 Cummins?

For all 2019 to 2022 Dodge Ram 6.7L Cummins diesel trucks there are two fuel filter locations. The primary diesel fuel filter is located in the engine compartment. The Diesel Fuel Water Separator Filter is located next to the fuel tank at the rear of the truck.

For all 2013 to 2018 Dodge Ram 6.7L Cummins diesel trucks there is only one fuel filter location found between the frame rails in front of the rear differential.

How many fuel filters does a 6.7 Cummins have?

The Cummins 6.7L diesel engines require two fuel filters, one in the front engine compartment (on the driver’s side) and another in the rear by the fuel tank (exact placement varies by model/year).

What size socket wrench do I need to take off the 6.7 Cummins fuel filter?

A 6-point 1-1/8″ or 28 mm socket is correct according to the Haynes Manual which specifies a 6-point socket at 28 mm.

Does changing a fuel filter improve performance?

Changing an old and dirty fuel filter or set of filters can improve engine performance from a degraded state back to a normal functioning level. Changing fuel filters on diesel engines will not add any additional performance capability above what is normal for the engine. With new filters though you will enjoy the benefits of adding additional protection to your engine, assuming no other issues, and extending it’s life.

How do I know if my fuel filter needs changing?

The most common signs that a fuel filter needs changing are:

  • Difficulty starting
  • Not starting at all
  • Shaky idling
  • Struggling at low speeds or cutting off all together

It’s important to note that all of these signs could be caused other issues with the engine.
